DIE HARD IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE

THE CASE

Delivered without prejudice to anyone’s uncle. Read it aloud at the table. You’re welcome.

Every year, at roughly the same moment the tree goes up, someone says it. “That’s not a Christmas film, it’s an action film.” This page is the end of that sentence. Bookmark it. It settles the argument every single time.

EXHIBIT A — THE CHRISTMAS PARTY

The entire plot begins at an office Christmas party. The hero arrives at that party, specifically. The film cannot happen without it. You cannot take the Christmas out of this film and still have a film — you would have an empty building and a man doing nothing.

EXHIBIT B — THE CALENDAR

It is set on Christmas Eve. Everyone travels to be there for the holidays. The characters are dressed for the occasion. A date and a dress code are about as festive as facts get.

EXHIBIT C — THE MUSIC

Sleigh bells. Carols. Festive tunes drifting through the action. The score hums Christmas music under the explosions like it’s conducting a choir in another room.

EXHIBIT D — THE SNOW

It snows. On the roof, in the last act, all over the ending. Snowfalls at the end of films are the cinema’s oldest shorthand for “this is a Christmas film, you absolute muppet.”

EXHIBIT E — THE GIFT

A present is delivered, a family is reunited, and a marriage is saved — with a bow on it. Christmas films end with reunions and ribbons. This film ends with reunions and ribbons.

EXHIBIT F — THE DECORATIONS

Wreaths. Baubles. A party banner. Office decorations on every floor, because the building is dressed better than anyone in it. The building itself has a Christmas outfit on.

EXHIBIT G — THE TEST

The counter-argument is always the same: “it’s an action film with a Christmas backdrop.” Fine. Run it the other way. Take a famous Christmas film and imagine it as an action film. If the Christmas comes off easily, that film had a loose grasp on Christmas too. This one doesn’t come apart. It is Christmas all the way down.

Verdict: it is a Christmas film. Case 2026/XMAS, closed on the evidence above, signed below by everyone with taste.
